Primary and Secondary Education in Azerbaijan
Currently a 11-year system of general education is in effect, with children starting school at age 6.
- Primary Education is 4 years (ages 6-10) Grades 1-4
- Lower Secondary Education is 5 years (ages 11-15) Grades 5-9
- General Upper Secondary Education is 2 years (ages 16-17) Grades 10-11
- Vocational Secondary School is 3 years (ages 16-18)
Academic year begins in September and ends in May. Education is conducted in both Azeri and Russian languages. In some cases, there is a practice of teaching in Georgian and Armenian. Secondary education is free and compulsory until the ninth grade. For university entrance, students must complete an additional two years.
The Ministry of Education is responsible for implementing state education policy and regulations.
