Primary and Secondary Education in Bangladesh
A 12-year system of education is in effect, with children starting school at age 6.
- Primary Education is 5 years (ages 6-10) Grades 1-5.
- Secondary Education is 5 years (ages 11-16) Grades 6-10
- After passing the final examinations of grade 10, students sit for the Secondary School Certificate Examination.
- Higher Secondary Education is 2 years (ages 16-18) Grades 11-12.
- After passing grade 12, students sit for a public examination called Higher Secondary Certificate Examination.
Academic year begins in January and runs through December. It consists of two semesters of instruction. Students attend classes six days a week, Saturday through Thursday with Friday being a day off. The language of instruction is Bangla in the school system.
The Ministry of Education is responsible for implementing education policy and regulations.
