Overview of the Bangladeshi Education System

Bangladesh follows a structured education system overseen by two ministries: the Ministry of Education (for secondary and higher education) and the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education (for primary level). The academic year runs from January to December. Bengali (Bangla) is the primary language of instruction, with English taught as a compulsory subject from the primary level. Bangladesh also operates a parallel Madrasa (Islamic) education system regulated by the Bangladesh Madrasa Education Board.

Bangladeshi credentials — particularly the SSC and HSC certificates — are among the most commonly presented documents for US credential evaluation, particularly for immigration petitions and graduate school admissions.

Structure of the Education System

Primary Education — 5 Years (Ages 6–10, Grades 1–5)

Compulsory and free. Covers Bengali, English, Mathematics, Bangladesh and World Studies, Science, and Religious Education. At the end of Grade 5, students sit the Primary Education Completion (PEC) examination administered by the Directorate of Primary Education.

Junior Secondary Education — 3 Years (Ages 11–13, Grades 6–8)

At the end of Grade 8, students sit the Junior School Certificate (JSC) examination administered by the education boards. This marks completion of junior secondary education.

Secondary Education — 2 Years (Ages 14–15, Grades 9–10)

Students select a stream: Science, Humanities, or Business Studies. At the end of Grade 10, students sit for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination — the most important secondary credential in Bangladesh — administered by one of the regional education boards. The SSC is the gateway to higher secondary education.

Higher Secondary Education — 2 Years (Ages 16–17, Grades 11–12)

Students continue in their chosen stream at a college affiliated with a university or education board. At the end of Grade 12, students sit for the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination. The HSC is the primary qualification for university admission in Bangladesh and is the credential most often evaluated for US immigration and admissions purposes.

University Education

Bachelor's degrees (Honours) typically take 4 years. Pass degrees are 3 years but are less commonly accepted for graduate admission abroad. Master's degrees are 1–2 years. PhD programs are 3–5 years. Bangladesh has both public universities (e.g., University of Dhaka, BUET) and private universities. The University Grants Commission (UGC) regulates higher education.

Education Boards

The SSC and HSC examinations are administered by 11 education boards across Bangladesh:

Dhaka Board
Rajshahi Board
Chittagong Board
Jessore Board
Comilla Board
Sylhet Board
Dinajpur Board
Mymensingh Board
Bangladesh Madrasah Education Board
Bangladesh Technical Education Board

Key National Examinations

The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) is taken at the end of Grade 10 and marks completion of lower secondary education. The Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) is taken at the end of Grade 12 and is the primary qualification for university admission. Both examinations are conducted annually, generally in February/March (SSC) and April (HSC). The Madrasa system awards equivalent qualifications: the Dakhil (equivalent to SSC) and the Alim (equivalent to HSC).

Why You Need a Credential Evaluation

If you hold a Bangladeshi degree or diploma and plan to study, work, or immigrate to the United States, a formal credential evaluation is required.

For immigration and USCIS petitions

H-1B, EB-1A, EB2-NIW, O-1, and L-1 visa petitions require a credential evaluation verifying your Bangladeshi education meets US standards. A document evaluation provides the equivalency statement USCIS adjudicators require.

For college or university admissions

US universities require a credential evaluation converting your Bangladeshi academic records into US credit hours and a GPA on the 4.0 scale.

If your documents are in Bengali

Documents issued in Bengali (Bangla) must be accompanied by certified English translations. Evaluation World offers Bengali-to-English translation services that can be combined with your evaluation order.
