Overview of the Brunei Education System

Brunei Darussalam follows a 12-year SPN21 (Sistem Pendidikan Negara Abad ke-21) education system introduced in 2009. The Ministry of Education oversees all levels of schooling. English and Malay (Bahasa Melayu) are both official languages and mediums of instruction. The academic year runs from January to November. Brunei's education system has strong British influences, reflected in its use of O-Level and A-Level qualifications.

Structure of the Education System

Primary Education — 6 Years (Ages 6–12, Years 1–6)

Covers Malay, English, Mathematics, Science, and Islamic Religious Knowledge. Culminates in the Primary School Assessment (PSR).

Lower Secondary Education — 3 Years (Ages 12–15, Years 7–9)

Students study a broad bilingual curriculum. Assessed through the Lower Secondary Assessment (PBB) at Year 9.

Upper Secondary Education — 2 Years (Ages 15–17, Years 10–11)

Culminates in the Brunei-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level (GCE O-Level), administered jointly by the Brunei Examinations Unit and Cambridge Assessment International Education.

Pre-University — 2 Years (Ages 17–19, Years 12–13)

Culminates in the Brunei-Cambridge GCE Advanced Level (A-Level) — the primary qualification for university admission.

University Education

Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) is the flagship institution. Bachelor's degrees take 3–4 years. Many Bruneian students pursue higher education in the UK, Australia, or Malaysia.
