Primary and Secondary Education in Brunei
Currently a 12-year system of general education is in effect, with children starting school at age 6.
- Primary Education is 6 years (ages 6-12) Grades 1-6. Culminates in the Primary School Assessment (Penilaian Sekolah Rendah / PSR)
- Lower Secondary School is 3 years (ages 13-15) Grades 7-9.
- Upper Secondary School is 2 years (ages 16-18) Grades 10-12. Culminates in an external examination leading to the Brunei-Cambridge Certificate of Education Ordinary Level. A further 2 years are required for the Brunei-Cambridge Advanced Level Certificate of Education for university entrance.
Academic year begins in January and ends in November. Education is conducted in English.
The Ministry of Education is responsible for oversight of primary and secondary education.
