Overview of the Ethiopia Education System

Ethiopia operates a 12-year system of general education overseen by the Ministry of Education. Amharic is the official language and primary medium of instruction at the federal level, with regional languages used in early primary grades. English is used as the medium of instruction from Grade 9 onwards. The academic year runs from September to July. Ethiopia has the second largest population in Africa and has been expanding its education system rapidly, though quality and access remain uneven.

Structure of the Education System

Primary Education — 8 Years (Ages 7–14, Grades 1–8)

Compulsory. Divided into First Cycle (Grades 1–4) in regional language medium, and Second Cycle (Grades 5–8) in Amharic/English. At the end of Grade 8, students sit the Grade 8 National Assessment.

General Secondary Education — 2 Years (Ages 14–16, Grades 9–10)

English medium. Culminates in the Ethiopian General Secondary Education Certificate Examination (EGSECE) at Grade 10. This is a key milestone for progression to preparatory school.

Preparatory Education — 2 Years (Ages 16–18, Grades 11–12)

University preparatory track. Culminates in the Ethiopian Higher Education Entrance Examination (EHEEE) at Grade 12. Passing this examination and achieving qualifying scores determines university placement through a centralized system.

University Education

Addis Ababa University is the flagship institution. Bachelor's degrees take 3–4 years. Ethiopia has rapidly expanded its public university system to over 50 institutions. Master's degrees are 2 years.
