Overview of the Kenya Education System

Kenya follows a Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) introduced in 2017, gradually replacing the old 8-4-4 system. English is the primary medium of instruction from Grade 4 onwards, with Kiswahili also being an official language of instruction. The academic year runs from January to November in three terms. Kenya has one of the strongest education systems in sub-Saharan Africa and produces a significant number of internationally mobile graduates, particularly in healthcare and engineering.

Structure of the Education System

Pre-Primary — 2 Years (Ages 4–5)

Early childhood education covering foundational skills in mother tongue medium.

Lower Primary — 3 Years (Ages 6–8, Grades 1–3)

Mother tongue medium transitioning to English. Covers Literacy, Numeracy, Environmental Activities, Creative Activities, and Religious Education.

Upper Primary — 3 Years (Ages 9–11, Grades 4–6)

English medium. Expanded curriculum. At the end of Grade 6, students sit the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA).

Junior Secondary — 3 Years (Ages 12–14, Grades 7–9)

Students sit the Kenya Junior Secondary Examination (KJSE) at Grade 9.

Senior Secondary — 3 Years (Ages 15–17, Grades 10–12)

Culminates in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE), administered by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC). The KCSE is the primary qualification for university admission.

Why You Need a Credential Evaluation

A formal credential evaluation is required for US university admissions, employment-based immigration petitions (H-1B, EB-1A, EB2-NIW, O-1, L-1), and professional licensing.

Kenyan academic documents are issued in English — certified translation is generally not required.
