The Ministry of Education oversees all levels of schooling. English is the official language of instruction throughout. The academic year runs from September to June. Liberia has been rebuilding its education system following years of civil conflict (1989–2003).

The University of Liberia is the main public institution. Bachelor's degrees take 4 years. Cuttington University is a major private institution.
