Overview of the Liberia Education System

Liberia follows a 12-year system of education modeled on the American system, reflecting its historical founding by freed American slaves. The Ministry of Education oversees all levels of schooling. English is the official language of instruction throughout. The academic year runs from September to June. Liberia has been rebuilding its education system following years of civil conflict (1989–2003).

Structure of the Education System

Primary Education — 6 Years (Ages 6–12, Grades 1–6)

Compulsory. Covers English Language, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Health. Conducted in English.

Junior High School — 3 Years (Ages 12–15, Grades 7–9)

Students study a broad curriculum. No national public examination at the end of this stage.

Senior High School — 3 Years (Ages 15–18, Grades 10–12)

Culminates in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) — the same examination body used in Nigeria, Ghana, and other West African countries. Students who pass the WASSCE receive the West African Senior School Certificate (WASSC).

University Education

The University of Liberia is the main public institution. Bachelor's degrees take 4 years. Cuttington University is a major private institution.

Why You Need a Credential Evaluation

A formal credential evaluation is required for US university admissions, employment-based immigration petitions (H-1B, EB-1A, EB2-NIW, O-1, L-1), and professional licensing.

Liberian academic documents are issued in English — certified translation is generally not required.
