The Ministry of Education (Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia) and the Ministry of Religious Affairs jointly oversee secondary and vocational education. The academic year begins in January and ends in November. Bahasa Melayu (Malay) is the primary medium of instruction at public schools, while English is widely used and taught from primary level. Islamic schools (Madrasahs) provide an alternative pathway within the Islamic school system.
Compulsory. Culminates in the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR — Primary School Achievement Test). All students automatically progress to secondary school regardless of UPSR results.
Students study a common curriculum. Culminates in the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PT3 — Lower Secondary Assessment, formerly PMR). Results determine stream placement for upper secondary.
Students specialize in Science, Technical, Arts, or Vocational streams. Culminates in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM — Malaysian Certificate of Education), administered by the Malaysian Examinations Syndicate. The SPM is the key secondary qualification for employment and further education.
Culminates in the Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM — Malaysian Higher School Certificate), administered by the Malaysian Examinations Council. The STPM is the primary pre-university qualification for public university admission and is considered equivalent to A Levels.
Bachelor's degrees typically take 3–4 years. Malaysia is home to several well-ranked universities including Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Master's degrees are 1–2 years and PhD programs 3–5 years.
