Primary and Secondary Education in Myanmar

Currently a 10-year system of general education is in effect, with children starting school at age 6.

- Primary Education is 4 years (ages 6-9) Grades 1-4.
- Lower Secondary School is 4 years (ages 10-13) Grades 5-8. Culminates in the Basic Education Standard VIII Examination.
- General Upper Secondary School and Vocational School is 2 years (ages 14-15) Grades 9-10. Culminates in the Basic Education Standard X Examination Diploma A for the general education track and Basic Education Standard X Examination Diploma B for the vocational track.

Academic year begins in January and ends in November. Education is conducted in English.

The Ministry of Education is responsible for oversight of primary and secondary education.
