The academic year begins in January and ends in November. Education is conducted in English, which is the primary medium of instruction for all subjects. Mother tongue languages (Mandarin, Malay, or Tamil) are compulsory second languages. Singapore's education system is consistently ranked among the best in the world, particularly in Mathematics and Sciences.
Compulsory. Covers English, Mother Tongue Language, Mathematics, and a range of subjects including Science, Social Studies, Arts, Music, and Physical Education. Culminates in the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) at Grade 6, which determines secondary school placement and stream.
Students are placed in the Express stream (4 years) or Normal stream (5 years) based on PSLE results. The Express/Special stream culminates in the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Ordinary Level (O-Level) examinations at Grade 10. The Normal (Academic) stream culminates in GCE N-Level at Grade 10 with the option of O-Level in Grade 11. The Normal (Technical) stream leads to the N-Level qualification.
Entry to Junior College (JC) requires qualifying O-Level results. JC culminates with a School Graduation Certificate and the Singapore-Cambridge GCE Advanced Level (A-Level) examinations — the primary qualification for university admission in Singapore and internationally.
