Overview of the Tajikistan Education System

Tajikistan operates an 11-year system of general education inherited largely from the Soviet era and subsequently reformed. The Ministry of Education and Science oversees all levels of schooling. Tajik is the official language of instruction, with Russian also widely used at higher levels. The academic year runs from September to June. Tajikistan has been implementing education reforms since independence in 1991, including participation in the Bologna Process for higher education.

Structure of the Education System

Primary Education — 4 Years (Ages 7–11, Grades 1–4)

Covers Tajik language, Mathematics, Natural Science, Music, Arts, and Physical Education.

Basic General Education — 5 Years (Ages 11–16, Grades 5–9)

Expanded curriculum including Tajik, Russian, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, and Geography. Culminates in a certificate of basic education after final examinations.

Complete Secondary Education — 2 Years (Ages 16–18, Grades 10–11)

Prepares students for university entrance. Culminates in the Certificate of Complete Secondary Education (Attestat) and national final examinations. University admission is through the Agency for State Financial Control and Combating Corruption centralized testing system.

University Education

Bachelor's degrees take 4 years. Master's degrees are 2 years. The Tajik National University is the flagship institution. Many Tajik students pursue higher education in Russia.
