Primary and Secondary Education in Uzbekistan
Currently a 12-year system of general education is in effect, with children starting school at age 6.
- Primary Education is 4 years (ages 6-9) Grades 1-4
- Lower Secondary Education is 5 years (ages 10-14) Grades 5-9
- Upper Secondary Education is 3 years (ages 15-17) Grades 10-12
Academic year begins in September and ends in June. Education is conducted in both Uzbek and Russian languages. In some cases, there is a practice of teaching individual courses in English. Secondary education is compulsory until the twelfth grade.
The Ministry of Public Education is responsible for implementing state education policy and regulations.
