Primary and Secondary Education in Zambia
A 12-year system of education with children starting school at age 7. Zambia follows the British education system. English is the official language of instruction in schools from preschool to tertiary education.
- Primary education in Zambia is seven years in duration, and runs from grade one through seven (ages 7-14). Students are awarded a Certificate of Primary Education upon completion.
- Junior Secondary Education is 2 years (ages 14-16) Grades 8-9
- Senior Secondary Education is 3 years (ages 16-19) Grades 10-12.
- Upon completion of secondary school, students sit for the Zambian School Certificate Examination or the General
Certificate of Education Ordinary Levels (5 “O” level passes), which gives access to higher education.
Most schools follow the academic year that begins in January and ends in December, and is divided into three terms.
The Ministry of General Education is responsible for implementing education policy and regulations.
